At this point, it feels like "Your Name" races to its ending faster than it should resulting in too much ambiguity regarding time travel and too little time to tie up its intersecting storylines. The film takes a more serious turn here, almost completely abandons its comedic moments and turns into a time travel drama with an impending disaster. This twist gives the story depth and conflict, but it starts up some problems with the film's pacing. Then "Your Name" delivers a plot twist that feels like a punch to the gut. Mitsuha totally fails at Taki's job as a waiter and also sets up him on a date with his crush while in his body, and Taki helps Mitsuha become popular at her school by excelling in sports while in her body.įun and awkward situations fill up the film until about halfway through as Taki and Mitsuha begin to fall for each other. "Your Name" delivers some humorous moments while the two have swapped bodies. ![]() The two are complete strangers, but they begin to switch bodies at irregular intervals. At first, Taki and Mitsuha think they are just dreaming of living each other's lives because the memories of their body-swap experiences fade quickly.Īfter hearing strange reactions from their family and friends and trying to communicate with each other through written messages, they realize their time spent in each other's bodies is real, and it creates benefits and consequences in Taki and Mitsuha's lives. Taki is a kind, serious and, at times, short-tempered guy, and Mitsuha is a funny, over-the-top girl who longs for a life outside of her rural town. "Your Name" opens up and introduces its two protagonists: Taki, a high school student living in Tokyo, and Mitsuha, a high school student living in the small town of Itomori in Japan's Hida region. These three aspects of the film combine to compose a narrative that's draws you in and puts you through an emotional roller coaster before it ends. With its hilarious and dramatic story, beautiful visuals and catchy soundtrack, it's really not a surprise that Japanese director Makoto Shinkai's "Your Name" has become the highest grossing anime film worldwide. ![]()
